Response to Robbie's post

In Robbie's post about the way music has changed since new technology was invented. I agree with the fact that now in time most artists don't really have to do that much to get their music out there for people to hear. They can just upload it to the internet and put in on Itunes or something for people to hear. Back when this kind of technology didn't exist, it was a lot harder and more work to get their music out there and spread it around. Robbie also made a good point about how artists used to perform live, and then people would forget about the performance the next day. But now since the invention of recording we can listen to a song however much we want to.

Response to Kate's post

I read Kate's post on mass mediums and I totally agree. The concepts we are learning now are sure to play a role in the future, whether I become a journalist, go into the advertising department, etc. Today in time we have a more advanced society with all the technology we have. I have learned a number of things that will help me in the future. Learning about the past is an important part of understanding the future. We have spent alot of time learnng about the history of all the mass mediums, and it really has helped me understand why things are or how they came to be what they are today. These lectures and concepts we learned about will be very helpful and like Kate stated, I will sure to use the skills we are learning in J1 and digital design in the future.

Class discussion on movies

For us teenagers today movies are an enjoyable experience where you can go out with your friends and have fun. Now days we can watch movies on our tvs at home, on the computer or even on our phones. So why do we still go to the movies? First off, who would want to sit at home and watch a movie on your small tv screen with no one around....no one. I would much rather go to a movie theater and enjoy the immersive experience. The big screen the covers all of my vision, the surround sound, the lack of lights. Also when you go to the movies to see a movie that just came out, you can tell everyone that you saw the movie! While everyone else has to wait for It to come out on DVD.  Movie business was booming, but then came along tv. Television cause movies to demassify because sales were going down. Movies demassified to niche audiences, but they are still popular today.

Class discussion on television

In class we discussed  the major impacts  television has had on people through out the years.  Before television was invented people were more socially active in the communities and face to face communication was more common. But since the invention of television people have become less social and spend more hours inside watching tv than out side with others.  I didn't even think about how major this is effecting  people. We spend so much time indoors watching tv and being antisocial that's outside with friends having fun!
When we watch tv we often look at commercials, wanting to buy the stuff they advertise. I never knew how much tv influences our spending habits. Whenever I see an ad for some type of clothes or shoes of course I make my mom go out and buy it for me! Also in political advertising, during  voting time all we see on tv are the political ads telling us to vote for certain people. But guess what we do? Vote for those people!  Practically never do you see people who don't advertise on tv winning an election,  simply because they have never been heard of.
I didn't even notice how much time of my life revolves around the tv, maybe  from advertisements, or watching my favorite show, or even just having it on while I'm doing my homework. Anyways, tv plays a big role in many of our lives.

Jeopardy

Before we take a test we always do Mr. Miller's jeopardy games. To me, these jeopardy seasons are very helpful in terms of what is going to be on the test. It prepares me so I have an idea of what is going to be on the test, and what do you know. Most of the information in the jeopardy games are on the test! I feel like jeopardy is one of the most effective ways of studying. It's a fun, competitive game that you get to play with your friends. Who doesn't love competition? and I'm pretty sure most of us are really excited about the game because whichever team wins gets a prize at the end! This gives us all the more reason to try harder and answer the questions correctly. This is a way better method of studying than just going over a study guide in class that probably most of the class wouldn't even pay attention to, or making flashcards that quickly get boring after the first 5 cards. Hopefully my other teachers will understand how great this way of studying is and consider the idea!

Class Disscussion on Radio

Today in time i just thought of radio as something that plays music while I'm in the car and when i have nothing else to do that plays music. After the lecture we had on radio I found out there was a lot more to radio than what we think today. Radio was actually used for something important; the news! Before it was invented, people would receive their news though the newspaper, but it would be the next day or days later. When radio came along, it was the first form of live media. People were able to here about news AS it was happening, being able to stay updated on what was happening. The first news to be aired live made a huge difference and it was a step forward in technology.

Response to Sydney's post on 9 principles and 7 yardsticks

When I read Sydney's post on the 9 principles and 7 yardsticks I totally agreed. We didn't really get to go into  much depth on the topic of principles and yardsticks in class, so I don't have a good grasp on the concept. It would help a lot, not just in class and on class assignments, but also trying to find mistakes out in journalism by knowing these. She made of good point about the principles and yardsticks being the "foundation of journalism." Knowing and understanding them would be a big help in how I see journalism, so I can better recongize when I see these on t.v. and in newspapers, etc. I hope in class we will go over them a little more sometime.

David Camm Trial

For the last month I had to watch WHAS 11 news at 6:00 every other night. Out of those 10 nights,
David Camm as on the news or either the top story 8 out of the 10 times. The David Camm trial goes all the way back to September of 2000, and is still in the news almost always 13 years later. I think this story is starting to get irrelevant. I mean, does everything that happened with David Camm have to be the top story in the news? This isn't even a Louisville story, so why is it all over the news stations of Louisville? WHAS is violating of the nine core principles of journalism: Making the Important Interesting. They are doing the exact opposite; making the interesting important. The David Camm trial is basically over, so we do not need to keep seeing it in the news every week.

Class Discussion on Internet

Last week in class we had a discussion on the invention of the internet. We basically use the internet every day, but we never really knew all the work that was put into making it what it is today. In 1995 the internet had 16 million users, and by the next year that number had increased by more than half...and it was just invented only 20 years before. Each year the number of peoplem using the internet increased by more than the last. In 1997 ebay and amazon were both added to the internet. After this, the number of people using the internet sky rocketed. I would understand the reason for this. This was the start/foundation of online shopping. People could actually order things off the internet and get them shipped to their house with the simple push of a button.

Ultimately the internet basically took over ALL other media. THe other forms of media were greatly impacted (in a negative way) by the introduction of internet. Why watch shows on the t.v. when
I can watch them portablely on my phone? Why read the newspaper when I can go on the Courier Journal website and get all the stories from there? THe internet opened up many oppurtunites and made things alot easier for the people. Only want one song off of that new album? well you don't have to buy the whole thing anymore, get it from the internet! The news media, movies, radio, magazines, etc. could all be found of the internet now. This forced most media to demassify and focus on niche audiences.

One thing the internet did was eliminate privacy. Whatever people put on the internet, STAYED on the internet. Many people struggle with that today because we don't realize that anyone is capable of seeing the information we put out there, and it will never go away.
